I don't see anything wrong with wearing that top for the first day of school as long as it fits within the dress code.  If you're into fashion then go with the current trends for your age group and you'll probably be a hit.  I do agree with many of the previous posts that a top like that calls for plain jeans and flat shoes.  Heels or embellished jeans would make the outfit too busy.  I would also avoid heavy jewelry.
