Question:

Is this a dumb idea?

I got up from bed today on another hot summer afternoon, as was frustrated once again, that i can't take a friggin nap without waking up like a sweating horse (with the fan on max!)

So i said to myself, when i build my own house I'm gonna attach mirrors to the western windows, so that on hot summer afternoons all I have to do is close the windows, so that it will reflect the light.

Has anyone used mirrors for windows before? does it work? is it practical?

  1. i'm not the smartest person in the crowd but i don't think it will work

  2. yes it does work cause it keeps the rays from the sun coming down on you and making you sweat.

  3. No.

  4. You're probably going to blind someone/burn something, but no, even if that worked the effect would be minimal.

Why not get an air conditioner?

  5. Mirrors reflect light, not heat!

  6. REAL dumb idea!

  7. This is a VERY dumb idea. I dont get it at all! It doesn't make any sense.

  8. someone invented an ingenious device called curtains....you ought to try it sometime

  9. you should make them solar panels and convert the energy into your air conditioner.

  10. To stop it getting too hot I would not have any windows that face the direction of the sun. I live in Australia where It the temperatures get into the high 40's and most houses have walls that face the west as the houses absorb the heat from the west.

Having windows are not pratical as the heat would penetrate through the glass still heating up the room. If the room is not too big you could get a ducted air conditioner which are portable and not too expensive.

  11. that sounds like a pretty awesome idea...original too =P

  12. Lol, if you use mirrors you will either blind people, or set fire to everything. Its best to use tinted windows. Or White blinds.

  13. my friends dad does it works but u have to get it in the right light couse if it isint it will just look all fogy and stuff

  14. buy an AC

    dont make it so complicated

but if want 2 save money go with ur mirror idea

  15. If you close the windows on a hot day it will not make your house any cooler, it's actually going to be hotter than it should be. If you have an AC it's perfectly fine to close all the windows but without any source of cool air(and the fan doesn't count) or fresh air your house will be stifling hot and you could have a heat stroke. So don't do it.

  16. get central air

  17. you can get mirrored window tint - you apply it to the windows. cheap, fast, easy.

you can probably get in on ebay,

  18. uhm... nooooo.... why would you waste your time doing this? do you want to have your windows blocked off with hot mirrors?

why not just install central air conditioning and nice blinds?

  19. It's probably a perfect idea, but then you have to consider, is the place where you are living safe??

  20. who in the h**l would do that???U noob

  21. Not dumb, it's not practical or efficient for your comfort level.

I would not use mirrors to stay cool during the summer season. Use dark drapes like dark blue to absorb heat and have white blinds on the inside panels of your windows to help reflect the light/heat.  That with your fans will keep you a bit more comfortable.  If all else fails pls invest in an a/c unit if not a complete system for the house.

  22. the problem is, u dont have ventilation to let the air flows

  23. uh, i'm not sure it's really practical.

first of all; that might be hard to build

and if the light reflects off the mirror at a certain angle, it might burn something. [maybe]

  24. I'd suggest blinds - I mean, some poor sods going to live opposite you and be blinded!

  25. haha, if you put mirrors for windows when the sun reflects off it, its going to burn your grass or catch something on fire.

  26. Just get an AC

  27. Actually high quality windows are designed to reflect the summer sun's high angle and allow the winter sun's low angle rays through.
