Question:

Is this a dumb thing to do?

I currently am enrolled in a private college preparatory high school. I'm not sure, but I've been thinking about possibly joining the military. Would it be a dumb idea to join the military after high school even though I was prepping up for college that whole time? I know that I could go back to college to become an officer and be enrolled in a good college, but what do you think? Would it be disrespectful towards my parents because they paid for this really good education? I know this isn't a good question to ask people you don't really know, but if you could do your best I would appreciate it.

  1. well ur just in luck u can do college and military at the same time just speak with your rec. and ask him or h**l to explain to you how you can do full time college and part time army. and then you will be able to do both. but to answer your question... nothing you choose is stupid

  2. If you want to be a military officer, then please do yourself the favor of going to college first. It will be allot easier on you. If you feel you need the college money, then go for the Reserve or National Guard. An old officer recruiting motto: Commission first career second.

  3. You could always consider applying to West Point, Annapolis or the Air Force Academy.  That way you'd get both a good education and serve in the military.

  4. No it is not a dumb idea. The Military will help pay for your college. Also, if you still want to go to college, you can join the Reserves and go to school full time while doing Military part time.

  5. NO do not do it, because the recruits that the Army gets right out of high school are not put on officer track, they are the "grunts" that get sent straightaway to Iraq or Afghanistan. The Army does not care if you went to a private or public school. When the Army says it will help you go to college, they mean correspondence programs (while you are deployed) or they will give you money through the GI bill once you complete your years of service and get honorably discharged.

If you really want to go to college and distinguish yourself in the military, then try to get into the United States Military Academy (West Point), Naval Academy or other officer training school. You will graduate with a 4-year Bachelor of Science degree & upon graduation you will be a 2nd lieutenant. You are well-educated so you should shoot for being an officer. Good luck!
