Is this a fantasy or a near possibility?

When cars will take off vertically and fly horizontally across to its destination(like a bird flies) and highways will become redundant."Airways" will be mapped out for motor transport so that they dont collide and flying will be at different heights.You land you vehicle into a parking lot and the whole route is computerised so no driving is required only monitoring.

It's a possibility, but not in this lifetime. The problem is that most people can't walk and talk at the same time let alone fly a vehicle. We have a long way to go before we evolve into such a society. But I think we're closer to a complete mass transit system based on superconductivilty and electric motors.

And what happens when there is a malfunction of either the nav system or propulsion system???

I hope this (flying cars) never happens, but if/when it does, I'm building a house the same way they build a "black box" so it will survive the crash.
