Is this a fast swim time?

Question

for a 13 year old girl, is swimming 25 yards freestyle in about 19 seconds fast?

also, about how many calories would a 13 year old girl burn swimming a mile of freestyle?

Not all that fast, sorry.

My swim league's all star time for 50 freestyle for your age group is 30 or 32 seconds, can't remember which.

And if you kept that same speed, your time would be 38 seconds. Not horrible, but not great.

That's actually not a very fast time, I'm sorry to say. I'm 16 and I swim a lap of free in around 12 seconds. Most of the 8 year olds on my summer team swim it in under 18 seconds. Keep working though! If you are swimming a mile a day it will certainly help you to get faster.

It would be OK, if you are able to keep this speed for any reasonable distance, like 100 yards. It means you make a 100 yards in more than 1 min 20 sec which is OK.

It isn't fast at all.

But it's not ridiculously slow at the same time

You shouldn't be worrying about 25's at the age of 13- it's all about the 50's, 100's, and 200's.

Don't worry about your calories!

I kind of went through that too for a little. But CHILL out. I think swimming is the BEST way to burn calories.

Remember, you asked the question so, you must be ready for all answers.  

So, sorry, but 19 seconds is very slow.  I've coached hundreds of 8 year olds that can do a 15 or 16 for a single 25 in a race so 19 is even slow for an 8 year old.  

However, if you can swim 19 seconds for a 25 and do that continuously for, let's say 70 or 80 lengths of the pool (about a mile), then you're doing well.

At the above rate and if you weighed around 120 pounds, you'd burn about 305 calories in a mile.  If you weigh less, you'll burn fewer calories and, of course, if you weigh more, you'll burn more.  But, the amounts are not dramatic.
