I am playing White against Chessmaster 3000. The level is 7 ply search. Why does the computer lose to this opening?

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. Bc4 Bc5 4. Nc3 Nf5 5. d3 h6 6. O-O O-O 7. Bd2 a6 8. Qc1 d6 9. Nd5 Bg4 10. Bxh6 gxh6 11. Qxh6 Nxd5 12. Bxd5 Bxf3 13. gxf3 1-0

I think the blunder is 12... Bxh3? Please give me some comments. Do you think this is a bug in the software?

  1. White is playing a sound chess opening based on classic opening principles.

In the first 8-12 moves: 1) develop knights first 2) make no more than two pawn moves in the opening - unless you have strong reason for another.. 3) develop bishops 4) castle

The computer playing black makes two suspicious moves that I wouldn't expect a solid chess player to make. 5..h6 (which actually sets up the exposing of the king from whites bishop and queen) seems totally unnecessary so early in the game. 7..a6 is another meandering pawn move accomplishing no meaningful piece development.

Whites opening is far from unstoppable. The computer program may be a sucker for it, but don't expect a good human opponent skilled at playing black to allow themselves to get set up like that.
