I dont have very much money but I still really want to learn how to fly fish. I am thinking about buying the Martin Fly Fishing Rod & Reel Combo - 8' Rod for $38. Is this a good rod and reel combo for a beginner or is harder to use because its so cheap.

What other inexpensive combos would you recommend for a beginner fly fisherman?

  1. It is fine.

The big problem most beginners have is they forget they are casting a line instead of a lure.

If you can get the line to go out 50 feet and drop your fly convincingly you are doing OK

  2. So far the answers are right on the $$$. I'm here to let you know that it is ok to start with entry level fishing tackle. It will help you decide if you like - fly fishing - and would like to pursue it further. The equipment may not perform like the premium tackle but it will do the job it was designed to do and help you make a decision for not a lot of money.

Tight lines and best of luck with your fly fishing!

  3. both cabellas and bass proshops have beginning set-ups and I know bass proshops guarantees their rods for a year I am not sure about cabellas But I think it's well worth the investment to buy better or best most the time  I actually rigged a complete beginners martin set up twenty years ago for a cousin who got it for christmas and though he was a bait fisherman he still has it and (jeez I don't know) he brought it out three years ago and he actually caught a small halibut on it when he went with me into the back bay.. so they hold up they are (this is the bummer) only a two piece and I like my four piece and my three piece and I even have an ugly stick saltwater fly rod as well.

  4. Any rod and reel you buy cheap just to see if you like the sport is worth it. Lets say you went and spent 300 dollars on a rod and reel and didnt like it now your stuck with an expensive rod and reel.. In the begin keep it simple keep it fun till you find out if you like the sport and if you do then go BIG.
