Question:

Is this a good idea to help my city recycle? If it is, how do I do it?

My idea is to give people in the city recycling bins and have a truck (like the one that picks up the trash) come by at least three times or twice a month. It will probably be costly but it will all help out in the end. Plus we spent over 400 grand on an unnecessary trail. Can the city get help from donors? I need some help and suggestions. (I'm fourteen. Does this matter?)

Well I would really appreciate your help. I would give 10 points to everybody with constructive criticism if I could.

Peace and love!

  1. Back when I was 14 they had a movie about a prototype recycling facility that automatically sorted the recyclables and broke the glass and packaged it all for recycling.

Yes it does cost more to recycle. Part of the reason is that the recycle materials have to be further recycled by hand. Here in Denver they do have the program for residential areas, single and small numbers of multi family dwellings, however they don't have it for the apartment buildings.

Probably would require a tax initiative to get the funding. Here they collect every other week, and the aluminum cans are a bonus for the company.

  2. it's so cool ur trying 2 help , i would want to do this myself but i really dont know how.  THis really seems like a good idea if u can do it (im not much younger than u) . no matter how young u r everyone can make a difference . try getting everyone to help. I LUV UR IDEA!!!!!!!! GO 4IT!

  3. I'm not sure where you live but this system is being used in most of the places that I have lived (and that is quite a few). One alternative system is in use where I live now - Amsterdam has recycling "bins" very large underground chambers accessed by a drop box at street level) on every block - I am never more than 100m away from a place I can put my recyclables.

Nearly all such systems are run by municipal (or equivalent) governments out of public funds.

Lobbying your local city council, mayor, or whoever your local representative is would be the best way to get this implemented.

It is purely a matter of political will, not technology.

Good luck and thanks for caring!

  4. Have a fundraiser, this will raise money for the truck. Also for the bins you should have some kind of hard plastic factory near or in the city. plus you should write to the city mayor about this idea. Anyway it is his city. You should get someone to drive the truck, an experienced driver to carefully do the job.

  5. First contact your rubbish service and ensure they don't have a mechanized system that sorts recycling from the trash just to make certain.

If they don't ask them why they haven't provided a two or three bin recycling system to the community. This will help you determine what the issues are. Let them know they are WAY behind the times.

In most cities this is a service that the trash company provides via the bin system - you put your recyclables in a sperate container and they pick up on trash day.  They certainly bill for rubbish so they should give customers what they want. Let them know their customers want recycling. Get neighbors to join in and let them know often.
