  1. I would go with a sport that requires some sort of coordination in addition to the running.  Soccer or basketball are good.  Anyone can run, but having quick hands and feet is important too.

  2. Soccer is the best option. Lots of running involved, and something which if he's good at, he can use during high school/college. The earlier they start at soccer the better. There isn't any concern over injury either with little kids and soccer.

And no matter where you live in the world, there's probably a soccer team nearby.

Cross country/track require a lot of patience and they aren't really offered for 4 year olds. Also, those aren't team sports and you want him to choose a team sport early on to build his social skills.

  3. Four seems like such a young age to start a sports as intensive as track and field.  You have to realize how many years ahead and in light of that, the number of injuries that can be sustained.

    1. at this age, cross country is not possible as it will require too much endurance which a four year old doesn't have.

    2. i don't understand the question.

    3. again, four years old is a very young age; check with your doctor and ask his/her opinon.  think of tiger woods who started at such a young age and now so young is required to take a year off golf because of injury.

    4. your child will learn about competition and focus.

    5. any competitive sport requires a huge sacrifice of time and money from the family.

  4. I think that's a good idea, to get him started in a sport early. I would say start of with cross country then move onto track, because track is so big, that once you get the hang of cross country and you see that he likes it, he can choose a certain event in track and field. Ask him to just pretend to do those sort of sports, like just for him to get a taste of the sports. Just go to the park, and if he seems to prefer one over the other, go with the prefered one.
