  1. Actually you should have at least 2 lights. A main light and a fill light and ideally a  background light.  You pick up a set of 2 studio "hot" lights for about $125.00 that includes the stands.

  2. a bit pricey, but good.

  3. I'm no expert but it looks like a pretty gd light to me

  4. For a studio one light is just not enough.  If you are on a budget then check out alienbees.  As for the idea of mixing continuous lighting with flash lighting the problem you have here is that even with say a 500 w/s strobe which you have shown here, it is going to blast out anything that the continuous light has to offer because tungsten continuous lights for the most part don't have the power to match strobes.  Of course you can always adjust the power of the strobe or simply move it back further to match the power of the continuous lighting, but then you have the problem of changing the quality of the light, and having to deal with two lights that produce different color temperatures(strobes produce a blue light and continuous lighting produces a yellow light, so have fun white balancing).  If you insist on only purchasing one strobe because of your budget then get yourself a good reflector like this http://www.onecall.com/ImageCache/photof...

or if you are on a real budget, a nice white piece of poster board.

However, If you are on a budget I would strongly advise you to go to ebay,or even craigslist and find a used professional set with at least three heads and various other light modifiers like grids, and gobos.  Some of the brands to keep in mind which tend to be would be:  Norman, Speedotron, Balcor etc.

Lastly, be careful with strobe lighting, especially big power packs essentially these things are capacitors which store great amounts on energy, used improperly they can kill
