I've recently lost 155 pounds. I'm 51 years old. I haven't ran in 20 years because of my weight, osteoarthritis in the knees, and a heel spur with achilles tendonitis. I started running again about 3 weeks ago. Mind you,I have been dieting for the last 9 months and training in a health club the last 4 months. So I have plenty of strength and stamina. I just haven't actually RAN any in 20 years. I ran a 5k last night in 28 minutes and 30 seconds. Is that a good time for a 5k run?

  1. that is a really good time for you age and considering you haven't run for that long. Great job on losing the weight. Just remember to not take things all to fast, you don't want to get hurt. Good job and keep it up.

  2. Assuming your doctor is fine with you starting a running program, then heck yeah, it's a great time.  In fact, 5k is a perfect distance to start with and they're a blast.  The people are generally pretty nice and it's a great way to earn a t-shirt.

  3. wow at your age, that's an awesome timing. keep it up

  4. WOw, first of all I would like to say congrats on all your hard work!  A 5K is 3.1 miles and with your time you are averaging around a seven minute mile!  That is great for your age and you probally could have won your age group as well.  Fantastic job and I hope you enjoy your new life! =)

  5. great time for someone just returning to running and at your age...good luck in your future races

  6. I am very impressed!  That is a respectable time, regardless of age.  With the conditions you described, its admirable, and i don't know if i would even have started that race!  Congrats on a great time!

  7. Congratulations on your weight loss and new found fitness!

Yes, you ran a pretty good time!  What an inspiration... Keep up the good work.

  8. You have got to be kidding me/us.

That is an outstanding time and would put you in the middle of the pack in most 5K races. That is, in a group of people who are on the average younger and much better prepared.

If you continue to run outdoors I think you can expect some improvement in your time. There are specific cardiovascular and biomechanical pathways used in a 5K that take several months or years to develop. Your results are spectacular.

Also, you deserve a round of applause for losing that much weight AND coming out of it fit.

Be gentle with your body, and rest whenever necessary.
