Is this a hipaa violation?

I was at the hospital to get some medical equipment. The admissions receptionist informed me that I have to pay a bill that was for my son. I have been paying on this bill and have checks to prove it. She said who the bill was for and she said it in front of other people. The bill had nothing to do with why I was there. Is this a hipaa violation?

Saying it in front of other people isn't necessarily a violation, like if you were at the desk.  Happens all the time.  If your neighbor were to go there and ask about it, they can't tell the neighbor anything.
