Question:

Is this a legal shot in Volleyball?

We call it the "hammer shot". It's where you clasp your hands, bend your arms and lift them up - similar to how you would lift up a sledgehammer, only higher - so that when the ball comes to you overhead or on your head, you can swing down your arms or "hammer" the ball into the opponent's side. If perfected, this shot can be deadly precise!

We play this shot quite often, but I have begun to think - is this shot legal? Is it professional? Because I've never seen the professional volleyball players play this shot.

  1. it is definitely a legal shot to use in a game, cuz i used it during canadian open and was not called on it. but it definitly would not make u look good in a pro game

  2. I've never seen anyone do that.....and I think that our coaches would have a fit if any of us girls did that!!!

  3. no thats not allowed cuz ur attacking with two hands. ur not supposed to have two hands on the ball in an attack. i think lol. but that does sound cool and im sure gonna try that. thanks.

  4. thats leagel but u have no control over the ball

  5. I don't think that's legal...It's like a lift and really, I think the only shot you can do in volleyball that involves something close to that is a set, unless that is what you're talking about.

  6. i think it is

  7. Yep it is, but not recommended. If you do that you have a greater chance of losing control of the ball. It would be better to use your hands like a set.

  8. okay...i have played volleyball for 6 years now and i am also helping out in the P.E. classes this year at my school and this exact question came up so i looked it up. and it is legal as long as both of your hands are together and as long as you hit the ball and not lift it. it is rarely used in varsity volleyball because your platform is no longer straight which makes it very hard to get the ball up and to your setter undercontrol. and most girls just set the ball when it is over their head but for some reason alot of guys try to do that. well i hope that helps!

  9. This move is legal as long as your hands are clasped together.  It is not standard volleyball technique since you can't control the direction and speed of the ball the way you can when properly hitting the ball (spiking).

If you are playing against teams with good defense, the move isn't deadly at all.  That's why you don't see advanced teams using it.

  10. to my knowledge its legal, but i have NEVR seen it, i bet it has very little control, that prob why
