Question:

Is this a medical or mental condition

I get severe cravings for spicy food.

I can get sort of frustrated until I sample something that burns my mouth off, then I feel relaxed and calm.

It's a bit like smoking, but thankfully less often. maybe once ever couple of weeks. Does chilli have addicitive properties or do I just really love a hot curry?

  1. Hi

I do believe that some foods have addictive properties,

Like cheese puffs you seem to eat soo many of them, and cheese crackers. spicy food too and chocolate and sweet stuff. lol

I wouldnt worry if i was you. As long as your not over eating its fine.

Spicy food is actually healthy if you have a sore throat, or a bad chesty infection.

  2. spicy food releases endorphins and therefor it is addictive.

  3. I don't think that it is a mental or medical condition.  I love spicy food, the spicier the better.  Sometimes the spice is so hot on fire that it tears me up.  I think that there is a adrenaline rush when one eats spicy food.  It could be addictive, but I heard that spice is supposed to be good for you.  How much of it...not sure.  Moderation may be the key.

  4. I'm no expert but i can tell you that maybe you just love spicy stuff like some people love chocolate, or smoking, or drugs....... mmmmmmmmmmmmmm druggssss. OJOJOJOJ lol.

  5. Going out on a limb here and suggesting it may be medical. I never could stand spicy foods, not even regular black pepper- but when I was pregnant with my son, I couldn't get enough hot, hot, and more hot-(pregnant with daughter and all I wanted was chocolate chip cookies). Perhaps it is a testosterone thing. Try to notice when the cravings hit and figure out if it is coinsiding with a release of your male hormones.

  6. I think it can be addictive in the same way as chocolate because eating spicy food gives you an endorphin rush. Do you feel particularly happy or 'high' after you've eaten spicy food?

I get a similar craving for sushi and I think it's to do with the wasabi (really hot horseradish). I feel drunk afterwards!

I don't think it's a medical or mental problem, I think it's just one of those things. It's not like eating curries will do you any harm. Just enjoy.

  7. Being addicted to healthy stuff has got to be a good thing.

  8. excellent to hear.  no, you've got no problems there.  just enjoy your spicy food and get some into you any time you can.

great to hear that others enjoy spicy food too.

  9. You're hooked, and there is no cure. Sambal terasi is an extra hot Indonesian spice mixture (mostly chili). I  love this stuff. I cannot leave a morsel on the plate even though my mouth is on fire and I have tears running down my cheeks. I have chili in some form with almost every meal I eat . It is more addictive than nicotine, caffeine or s*x in my opinion.

  10. Appetite fatigue? Habit?

They say in India that what you are doing is the best thing you could do health-wise, that your stomach will benefit.

    Are you pregnant?
