They show the pores in the face of life

or

flowers are trying to live on flowers

here is the entire quote

“’So now do you see why books are hated and feared? They show the pores in the face of life. The comfortable people want only wax moon faces, pore less, hairless, expressionless. We are living in a time when flowers are trying to live on flowers, instead of growing on good rain and black loam Even fireworks, for all their prettiness, come from the chemistry of the earth. Yet somehow we think we can grow, feeding on flowers and fireworks, without completing the cycle back to reality.’”

  1. Yes- it is a metaphor and 'the face of life' could also be personification because 'life' doesn't have a 'face', so here, it has been personified.

  2. I think it would be a metaphor

Pores - bad things in life or ideas that have been passed down from generations.

wax - how most of society wants us to view the world: as a sweet apple, ripe with no bruises or worms.

they look at one little thing and pick it apart

People dont want to see the little bad imperfections of life (glass half empty view) and would rather live a life where they safe and dont want to look outside of the box because they are afraid of the unknown. They were taught one way and they do not want to be told a that it actually works a different way. it says we we think can grow on passing down information that we think to be true ... but how could we grow as a society when we are not learning anything new. old rules must be tested in order for us to 'grow'

  3. Tip:

similes always include the word 'like' or 'as,' for comparison

metaphors say something 'is' something, by giving one object the features or qualities of something different
