i own a 2005 dodge neon sxt. when i bought it, it only had 10,500 miles. i got the oiled changed at 12,260 miles. now i have 15,260 miles. for this particular car, how often is an oil change needed? i wanted to get an oil change but my mom told me just because it has been 3000 miles doesnt mean i need to go for an oil change now. is my mom right? what would happen if i dont go for an oil change? in fact, when i went last time they put a sticker that said 15,260 on my car.

  1. Trust your mom. Most of the time she's right.

  2. 3000 mile oil changes were important years ago.  The people who sell oil and perform auto maintenance want you to believe it is still true, but it is not.  Your mom is right, but you do still need to change the oil and filter occasionally.  I would say between 5000 and 10,000 miles is okay, perhaps even more if you are using synthetic oil.  However, you should routinely check the oil level in the engine to be certain there are no leaks.  See what the owner's manual for your vehicle recommends.

  3. They just want to sell you oil changes. 5000 or even 7500 miles between changes can be ok (depending on how you drive).

  4. I use synthetic oil in my vehicles and change it every 6,000 miles.

  5. Myth or rant?

  6. get it changed! the sticker is there for a reason & the man who put it ther should know more then your mom unless she is a mechanic & worked longer then the guy who put the sticker on!
