  11. To me this name sounds feminine. I know several girls with the name Shay. However, I know that the name Shay is a masculine Irish name (the anglicised form of Seaghdha, which means 'admirable'). Some sources claim the name is of Hebrew origin (meaning 'surplanter'). And while it is said to be a soley male name by some sources, others claim it is unisex or female. For more information on this, just browse through the websites I have listed in the source section.

The spelling that looks most feminine to me is Shaye. It looks like the nicest spelling in print too, as the added 'e' balances the name out nicely.

EDIT: I agree with Aoife N. Shay does sound like it could be short for Seamus, and possibly Shane.

  12. I think of it as a girl name.  I don't like the name.

  17. girl. even though "shay" is spelled more masculine it still SOUNDS feminine. so give it to a girl.

  18. Shay to me sounds like a female name. I have a friend named Morgan Shay, so everyone calls her Shay. To me, Shay (spelled like it is) is a feminine name.

  21. Girl i think. Its a little poofy for a boy!

  22. Well......I think of it as a male's name. Now this might be because the only person I knew who had the name "Shay" was a man. Perhaps if it had been a woman I might have thought otherwise though. Most of the time..it's not how the name sounds, it's the s*x of the person we know or have known to have the name to condition our mind to think that it's either for a boy or girl. This name is actually a universal name to me. Kind of like the name "Chris".

  23. I think it sounds more like a girl's name. And I think Shaye or Shae look more feminine.

  24. it's a girl name..shay and shaye are more feminine looking to me.

  26. I think of Shay as a boys name, short for Séamus

  27. shae

  28. shaye or shane
