Question:

Is this a normal change of habit for African clawed frog?

So I'm still new to the world of African Clawed frogs so any changes in his behavior sort of scare me but heres the thing.

For a couple of days my frog has been pretty energetic and moved around quite a bit . Today he has been very still only to move when eating (he still has a healthy appetite) and to zip off to the surface for air. Only to come back to that exact spot in the same position to....sit. Is it normal for their habits to change so quickly or is there a reason for him being so...blah?

I did a 10% water change earlier than usual just in case it had something to do with the nitrate/nitrite and ammonia lvls.

  1. yes! very normal :)

i have had my african clawed frog for over 9 years and he does that once in a while too

it also may be cold? do you have a heater in the tank?

if not, getting one might energize him a little

but mine is perfectly fine without one

    hope this helps

  2. As Erin said it does seem to be fairly normal behavior. I did not see how long you have had your frog or in what size container it resides. You said you did a 10% water change earlier than normal but did not say when the last one was or how often you do them. Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and as Erin said temperature could all be factors. Do you have a thermometer in the tank? The frog is EXOTHERMIC (big word meaning same body temperature as the surroundings) and so will be more active when warm. You should have water test kits for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate (and your local pet store will probably test your water if you ask). These frogs are outlawed in several states because they can tolerate wide extremes of temperature but Erin had a very good idea when she suggest the heater. You want an ideal temp of around 74F. Possibly he has just decided to conserve energy as so many creatures do.
