Is this a normal procedure orthodontists do?

recently, i went with my orthodontist for the monthly adjustment of my braces. since i also just moved, it was only my second appointment with this doctor, after previously being treated for more than a year at the place where i originally got my braces. at the appointment, the new orthodontist did somthing without mentioning anything to me: he took some tool, like a file, and stuck it in between my bottom teeth in various spaces to abrade them. after he stopped, (which i now regret) i asked him what he had done and he said he was abrading them to make space for rotating. with my other dentist i only had about 6 months to go and this new dentist estimated about the same, 5 months. i had no idea what he would do and i find it odd because, at the first place, they only used the braces for the adjustment of my teeth so i thought the new dentist would do the same. i thought that's what the braces were for, to adjust my teeth. if not, i thought that he would at least inform me before

  1. I had braces for 5 years because of moving with the family. I had three different orthodontists. I cant tell you if what he did was normal procedure but I will tell you from personal experience every orthodontists is going to have a different plan for your teeth. It would be smart (if possible) to stick with one orthodontists. I know you may not have had that choice. Talk to your orthodontists and get his views. Call your old orthodontists and sign a release form and transfer your file to the new doc. Instead of him working from scratch, no one is a mind reader, maybe he can get a better view of what he is working with.

They are your teeth, and that is his job to listen to your concerns. Dont be afraid to open up to him.
