For Marguerite:

Arizona

by Elaine P

Riding over desert sands

Pink and orange rock

Not on Mars, but Arizona

Oh! Stop the car, please stop!

Her camera burns inside her hand,

Desert heat forgotten,

This child of ocean breeze exults,

In beauty she’s besotted.

A thousand photos she has made

Of colors new and bright,

But air conditioned she will sleep,

On this, her heat-filled night.

  1. I think it's charming.  An interesting study in human behavior really, the fact that ocean folks are mesmerized by dessert beauty and the valley dwellers are in love with the ocean, the islanders love the mainland to vacation and the mainlanders go to the islands or to the mountains!  It's a comical little irony.

We west coasters just returned from a New England vacation and just loved it :O))))

Your poem is very well said and any visitor would appreciate it.

  2. Can I come to Arizona, pretty please?  I can see John Wayne now, standing in a characteristic pose with the whole vista of Arizona behind him.   (I watched Westerns mainly for the beautiful views!) Those rocks jutting up into the sky carved by the wind into futuristic sculptures - wow

The child of ocean breeze exults....the rhythm is impeccable and the choice of words sublime.

This is such a simple little poem and what makes it special is that it encompasses such a lot;  visual description, speech, and a small story...and behind the small story is a point - beauty is often accompanied by drawbacks.....in this case -the heat.

  3. A welcoming gift that every child of ocean breeze will cherish.

The west is such a mesmerizing place.

  4. Visitor,,non-visitor  Resident would love this poem ...I know I do ....I should be moving to Arizona ...Hopefully within two years  Me thinks you captured Arizona beautifully...Thank You

  5. I never forgot the brilliant colors of the rock canyons in Arizona and Utah - oranges, reds, yellows and cremes.  Since I am a coastal lass - with fog and stuff - all the desert colors were overwhelming. ♥

  6. Thank you for my poem.  I will think of Mars - lol - and you as I sweat.  Or perhaps, a cold front will head our way.  Methinks it will be worth it whatever the weather.  Yes, this visitor likes the poem.

  7. Dear Lord, you've done it well! I'm always lugging the camera about, taking pictures of every little thing!! One day they'll come in super-handy, for purposes of ed-iting.....SOMETIMES I can draw pretty good too.....

  8. I really, really, really, really, really like it a lot!!!!!!

Thank you for sharing it with us.

  9. A beautiful poem for a beautiful friend.

  10. It would also work in South Texas this summer.  We aren't quite as colorful as Arizona, but we are colorful and we are HOT!!

  11. The rock, sand and cactus all stand out in my mind as I read your poem for a visitor.  I did one about the Arizona dessert once long ago.  I'm not even sure I still have it, but I think it's somewhere around here.  I like what you did with yours.
