5x^3 - 7√x + 2

Is this a polynomial?

Since in a polynomial you cannot divide by a variable, I'm not sure if this counts as dividing by a variable.

  1. Polynomials are terms separated by + or - signs, so this is a polynomial. To be more precise, it is a trinomial (3 terms).

  2. it is not a polynomial because the variable of the second term 7√x contains an exponent that is not a non-negative integer. √x is similar to x^(1/2) and 1/2 is not an integer.

  3. No, it is not a polynomial.

The powers of x must be positive integer numbers

    √x =x^(1/2)

1/2 is not an integer number.

  4. No. Each term of a polynomial (other than a constant term) must have variables with positive integer exponents.

Even though this doesn't actually count as dividing by a variable, the term 7√x has exponent = 1/2, therefore not a polynomial
