Question:

Is this a pretty good bike?

I just inherited a bike I actually purchased as a gift for my mom 14 yrs ago. I remember I paid about $370 for it then, and it is in exceptional condition. There is some, but not much info on this bike online. I am trying to figure out if I should keep it or sell it for something easier to use.

It is a 1994 Bridgestone XO-5 hybrid 21 speed.

I know it was designed by Grant Peterson before he left Bridgestone.

The XO-5 was more like a typical "hybrid" with 622 mm (700c) wheels and a variant moustache handlebar with 22.2 mm (7/8") diameter, that used "mountain bike" type controls.

I also wanted to know how hard or expensive it would be to put MTN bike tires on this hybrid as the street tires cause me to go so fast I freak out. No really I have scared myself silly this week trying to ride this bike on the street. Any info or answers would be a great help. Thanks

  1. Converting tires to MTB isn't going to work. Maybe just changing the tire to a wider design might help. Make sure you are fitted right for the bike. Go to a bike store and ask your questions there. Also bring that bike along so that the "qualified "sales person can get a better idea what he's dealing with. Or...

Try riding the bike as it is. Put air in the  tires and get out there. How old was your mom when you gave it to her? What is your age now? Did your mom have trouble riding this bike? If it was good for your mom..... Good luck!

  2. Sounds like an awesome ride!

If you're going too fast for your comfort, "feather" the brakes to slow down and stay  at a comfortable speed.  In the city, I'm constantly feathering my brakes as I'm going through traffic, keeping a nice feel of control over the bike.

Maybe have a bike tech look the  bike over if you're  concerned whether everything is in tip-top shape.

I'd say keep the bike, unless you're really hard up for cash.
