Question:

Is this a "good" salary in Oxford?

I've never been in UK before, and I just get an offer to work as a postdoc. in Oxford, and my salary would be 285,00 (before taxes). Frankly, I totally have no idea about it, neither the life in UK. So I'm gonna ask, is that over the average salary in UK? And, is that enough for a cozy life there?

  1. well over here thats a really good salary, most people here on normal jobs are on £12,000 - £15,000

but oxford is a high priced place so £28,000 is good

  2. Well Oxford is very expensive and i don't think that £28k is enough to live comfortably there. You would probably struggle to have a life!

The average wage in the UK is around £30k. £28k is a good amount but just not for the Oxford area!

P.S. Im assuming you mean £28,500 a year? Your question isn't clear!

  3. I'm sorry, but I get confused when Europeans use commas in numbering instead of periods.

Is that £285, or is it £28500? Is that salary annual or monthly? What other benefits come with your salary (do you get free housing on campus, for example)?

I can only give you a comparison in US dollars.

The equivalent salary is US$56,400. That isn't bad, even with having a doctoral degree, and working at the university. Are you single? That would make things easier.

I'm older and not as well educated, however I do make more with my MBA and 20 years experience. Still, this is an apples-to-oranges comparison.

You'd also have to define "cozy" for me. Are you looking for a one-room apartment (flat), a scooter, and a night out at the pub every once in a while... or something more substantial?

I could live on your salary, in the UK, pretty easily. I could do it here in Texas with an apartment and no medical bills (I'm a heart patient and require certain medications).

  4. The average salary here is £24,000 a year, so you will be fine.

  5. cozy   no

    to live

    just about

  6. I'm guessing you mean 28,500 gbp? If so then you can live comfortably on that, though not extravagantly. How much is your accommodation going to cost?

That is about average I would say. Oxford is not the most expensive town to live in.

  7. do you mean £285.00 a month? what are you going to be doing? whats a postdoc?

  8. Hey, Yea £28,500 is good, After tax you should receive around £22,230 (deduct 22%) If you are renting, then this is plenty, especially if you live alone, I survived on £6000 a year!!! Just shop at ASDA which is the cheapest supermarket or tesco. If you can avoid getting a car i would!! they are the most expensive thing, and remember in UK you have to pay council tax , which depends on your income, and is normally around £80 at the moment. Don't worry about people saying Oxford is an expensive area, All areas have expensive parts, just because a lot of rich people live in the area doesn't mean it is expensive. And yes your wage would be above the average. A lot of people would dream of having a salary that high. Regarding life in the UK, depends where you are coming from? from US or Canada? You will settle in ok, just get to know people and they can help you out and give you advice about local facilities etc, Also visiting your country's embassy in London would be a good idea or going to the local tourist information centre. Oxford is a fairly safe and nice place to live, it has excellent transport links to london. Good luck with your move etc!!! :)

  9. Mr Jones hit the nail on the head!!

  10. The average salary in the UK is £26,000 per annum.

  11. £28,000, lets you rent a cosy flat, drive a small car, eat enough not to starve and get away once a year.

  12. There was a news report a few weeks ago that the minimum annual income needed to live comfortably in the UK (covering essentials and the occasional treat) is £13,500 for a single person and £27,000 for a couple. If you're a single person, then you're likely to be fairly comfortable on £28,500, though the price of accommodation is the great variable, but you won't get rich unless you win the lottery!

  13. Is this a month?  or a week?

  14. Judging by your question am i right to assume this is a wind-up?

I'm no English gramma expert but looking at your text I wouldn't let you wipe your own @r$e never mind become a "postdoc",whatever that is.

Oh and by the way, welcome to UK.
