Question:

Is this a reasonable request?

A friend of mine is babysitting for me one day this week. It might be during a "cranky" time of day but there's nothing I can do about that unfortunately. She wants to take my son to the park if he gets cranky. It would involve a short drive there. I feel nervous about my friend watching two toddlers at the park since there's a road nearby. Basically I don't want her to take my son anywhere when she watches him. It'll be for a couple of hours that I'm gone.

Am I being reasonable?

What should I say?

  1. I would simply say that if he gets cranky it would be worse for her at the park. When my son hits his "cranky" hour, nothing helps. I also make sure that everyone knows I do not feel comfortable with them taking my children ANYWHERE! I am sure you respect her requests and as long as she knows that you are taking a stand on the issue she will do the same. Just be gentle but firm.

  2. I think you are being overly cautious.  But what mother out there doesn't feel that other mothers can't do there job as well.

I am sure it will be fine.  I have 4 children and the last three are all 1 year apart.  I watch them just fine.  If anything she will watch yours more closely because it is not hers.

But if you feel that way then just let her know your concerns.  or ask her to take them to a different park.

  3. Are you paying her? If so, you are the boss and she should follow your instructions. If she is doing it as a favor you are in an awkward position. You could drive off without leaving your child's car seat but that will probably annoy her. Just be as honest as you can.Maybe you would be better of with a sitter who is not a friend.

  4. sounds reasonable. you are the mom. Just tell her that you'd rather her keep him at home. you don't feel comfortable with him being out of the house while you're away. she should be able to understand that.
