Question:

Is this a sign of depression or a personality disorder: extreme anger, physical assaulting family members?

This person has everyone else walking on eggshells. He is very angry and has attacked one family member and blames that family member for everything. He has accused this family member of talking about him all the time...which is not the case. No one in the house can have a private conversation or talk on the phone without the fear of setting this person into a tailspin.

He spends the majority of his time lying around the house looking at TV or on the computer.

Appreciate your take on this one.

  1. could be a number of things, personality disorders, mood disorders probably paranoia associated with whatever is going on with him.  Only a Psychiatrist could say.  If he attacked someone he needs to be hospitalized ASAP.  It may be to late to from that incident, but the next time he attacks or even treatens someone, the police need to be called.  Cant just leave it go.....can only get worse, and if he has already attacked someone once, cant wait for it to be attacking somone with a weapon do do somthing about it.  His family cant live walking on eggshells around him.

  2. If the person is assaulting family members, then they need to be taken to the hospital for evaluation. If they won't go voluntarily you'll have to contact the police and they will take them to the hospital, not to jail. Harm to others in justification for involuntary committal(court ordered).

  3. it sounds to me this person really has some deep issues going on,sounds like possible borderline, but i am not doc, only trying to help you to understand what could be causing this.is this person doing any type of drugs as this can alter his personality too.why is he so hostle with family members, has anything recently happened, which could cause him to be reacting in this manner?also sounds like he is paranoid,as he thinks everyone is talking about him.
