Is this a wasp nest?

Okay, I heard from my brother that there was a hornet/wasp nest in the patio at my house. He told it was near a wall, not the top corners, near some shovels and sticks. It just looked like small chunk of mud stuck to the wall, but he told me he saw 2 wasps on it. So is it a wasp nest? And how would I get rid of it? Its not really bug though, but I have a dog in the patio, and I don't want him to get hurt

I've only run into bee nests, but never wasps.

  1. It looks like one but I don't see the hole.  All you need to do is wait until dark and knock it down with a stick.  Wasps are relatively inactive after dark but still you want to leave after you knock it down.  By morning they will be all gone.  There are unlikely to rebuild the nest.  Some wasps are very tolerant of people and animals around their nest but dogs are not very smart when there is something to investigate.  So it would be better to get rid of the nest before your dog gets stung.

  2. it is a type of wasp nest, but not what you are thinking... dirt daubers (mud daubers) are a type of solitary wasp, they are not aggressive like the social wasps yellow jackets and paper wasp. You can knock it down anytime you want I have never heard of anyone being attacked by one.  If you do knock it down you will see it stuffed full of paralyzed spiders for the young to feed on as they develop. Some species specialize in huntink only black widow spiders... these guys are beneficial if you choose to leave them alone.

  3. Yes it is, They are often called mud-daubers. They build the nest out of mud.

It is best to wait until dark, thats when they return to the nest, plus they cannot see in the dark. You can either spray the nest with wasp killer,(soak it good) or since it's small smash it with  brick or something. There should be entrance holes in the bottom that you can spray up into. Be sure and remove it from the side of the house or after a while new ones will move in.

  4. Yes, waasps are known for making nests.  From the picture, it looks like mud waasps / mud daubers.  If you google those, you'll see other similar nests.  Here's a couple examples:

You can take a water hose and rinse away the mud.

  5. It sounds like a dirt dobber nest.  These are wasps and are sometimes called mud wasps.  I had a lot of them at a former house. They are non-aggressive --- I've never been stung by one.  Use wasp spray to get rid of them if you must. Since they are harmless, perhaps they should be left alone.....

  6. Looks like a mud wasp nest.
