hello

i am currently writing an essay about ecological footprints. i have found a good quote but am wondering if it is too long. i have already altered it from -

Triangular discussions for sustainable globalisation—instead of the traditional bilateral dialogues—should be established between the countries and regions playing these respective roles. This approach could aid the transition towards a global circular economy, in which consumption patterns provide a higher quality of life with far lower consumption of natural resources.

  1. If I were you I would not alter the quote at all.  For starters it does not seem overly long and if it is relevant to your argument and backs up your line of thinking then it is fine.   The only reason tutors like myself tell people quotes are too long is generally (a) becuase vast swaths of it are not relevant (2) it is far too long for the length of the essay (3) it replaces rather than backs up your argument.  The quote, as a rule, should back up what you are saying rather than effectively making the argument for you.    Hope that helps :-)

  2. You do need to be careful about quotes, if you are going to use them you need to be accurate - if you omit bits show ellipses - otherwise make the point in you own words but reference and credit you sources. You need to avoid plaigirism so always be concientious about this. Your quote is only two sentences, so not too long (I 've seen a lot worse - whole essays of one quote joined to another, basically waffle) and if it helps to evidence your point clearly, don't be afraid to use it.
