Question:

Is this bad for Muslim women to do

Can they fast on their periods (even though it's not accepted) and then make them up later??

The reason I ask is: you don't want other non-Muslims to see you eating! Plus, what if you really like fasting and being part of the whole? Can you fast just for the fun (if you feel up to it) even if it isn't accepted as a religious fast?

Thnx!

  1. Yes, I think you can. That actually makes sense bc it would be awkward if you were the only one eating. :) But then again, I'm not sure.

  2. no i don't think so... just as you can't pray when u are on your period...or pretend to.

u can hide it from the other people but you have to eat something or drink something

  3. your all mad wanting to starve yourselves.

  4. they can not have s*x with their husbands, thats what is prohibited and not abandoning fast and salat..

these prohibitions are found in hadith books,a total misguidance, fabrications, lies and conjecture

"They ask you about menstruation: Say, it is harmful; you shall avoid sexual intercourse with the women during menstruation; do not approach them until they are rid of it. Once they are rid of it, you may have intercourse with them in the manner designed by God. God loves those who are clean. Your women are the bearers of your seed. Thus, you may enjoy this privilege however you like, so long as you maintain righteousness. You shall observe God, and know that you will meet Him. Give good news to the believers." 2:222, 223

As we know, many Islamic Scholars tend to abuse the meaningful verses of the Quran to benefit their own agendas. One of the abused verses that I would like to write about is verses 2:222-223.

First, let us tackle the misunderstanding of the Islamic scholars regarding these verses. They have innovated religious laws prohibiting menstruating women from observing the Contact prayers, fasting, and even touching the Quran. However, a careful study of these verses shows that God is teaching us about personal hygiene, and there is no law dealing with the religious practices in these verses.

As we know, menstruation is a feminine issue. Ironically, it is the men who ask about menstruation and the revelation is directed towards the men. Now, what could possibly concern a man regarding a feminine issue, except for his own interest in sexual matters? God answers the men by initially letting them know that having sexual intercourse with a menstruating woman is harmful, and they should not approach them until they get rid of it. The phrase "get rid of it" is "tatahharn" in Arabic which is the same word used in 3:55 when God tells Jesus: "I am terminating your life, raising you to Me, and ridding you of the disbelievers."

However, if this verse were referring to women's religious practices during menstruation, God would have directed the verse to the women. As it turns out, neither in this verse, nor in any other verse God forbids menstruating women from practicing their religious duties; it only refers to personal hygiene, and the statement of "your women are the bearers of your seed", in the following verse proves this fact. A man and his wife are allowed to have intercourse in the manner designed by God, which is vaginal intercourse.

The only way a woman can be "the bearer" of a man's seed is through the v****a to the uterus. By mentioning this statement, God is prohibiting non-vaginal intercourse. Therefore, the statement of "however you like" cannot be misconstrued.

Now let us look at the point of view of the opponents of religion.  Their view on this matter is that God humiliates the women by such statements. On the contrary, God is preventing men from viewing women as sexual objects and from sexually abusing women by commanding the men to have sexual intercourse with them in the manner designed by God.

It is noteworthy that the statement "as long as righteousness is maintained" is there to protect the woman. Please note that this verse does not only deals with the physical aspect, but also moral aspect which does not allow a man to abuse a woman by forcing her to have s*x anytime without her consent. Also important is the fact that the statement of "maintaining righteousness" comes immediately after "however you like", to prevent physical and moral abuse.

God ordered the husband and wife to live in love mercy and tranquility 30:21. Therefore, when all activities in marriage are based on this statement, which is the source of righteousness between spouses, it's more likely to prevent any evil and vice in marriage.

We send down in the Quran healing and mercy for the believers. At the same time, it only increases the wickedness of the transgressors. 17:82

  5. Hey Sis!

It doesn't matter if non-Muslims see you eating...it's not about them. And if they asked you simply tell them, I'm excused from fasting. If they ask why and you don't want to share, just say personal reasons. Be assertive. It's awesome that you enjoy fasting! And the intention alone is a great deed in itself, but if Allah (swt) has prescribes that we not fast during this particular time, it is because He knows us best! It is particularly important for our health during menstruation to be as hydrated as possible in order to have a healthy cycle. You wouldn't want to get yourself sick and not be able to complete future fasts.

You can fast anytime, for any reason. Fasting is one of the deeds that we do specifically for Allah (swt) sake and pleasure. It is for the love of Allah (swt). Everything else we do, essentially has something in it for us. But fasting teaches us patience, self-restraint, commiseration for the poor, a form or prayer, a form of purification of the soul, practice in abstaining from worldly desires, it brings us closer to Allah (swt), we are in an amazing state of constant reminder of Allah (swt)...because we are constantly aware of why we are fasting--FOR ALLAH (swt) of course.

The best fast is one done with the best intention and willingness.

If you fast three days every month each day of fast is equivallent to 10 days and therefore like a perpetual fast. In the end, it is best to restrain ourselves from doing anything outside what is prescribed for us (eg fasting during menstruation) because we do not want to adhere to or create an innovation.

    Salaam! :o)

  6. Well, a lot of women experience pain during their periods and need to eat, drink, and take pain medication.  We're commanded not to fast during the period, so we should not fast.  There's no problem with not eating in front of people, but you should make a point to eat and drink sometime in the day because you are not supposed to fast.

If you're around fasting people, it's good if you eat alone and don't cook strong smelling food while they are fasting.

  7. During the period women lose a lot of nutrients and fluids so it is important to replenish yourself with food, that is why we are not suppose to fast while we are on our periods. health wise you should eat and drink fluids during your period.

  8. You're gonna have to hide and be very discreet.

If you go to school, go in a room you can close.

  9. by doing so you are going beyond what is required by Allah swt and it is not acceptable for anyone to transgress any bounds set forth by Allah swt.   If a non-Muslim sees you eating so what?  If they ask you, you can say in an indiscreet manner that there are certain times when people are not obliged to fast.  You do not have to tell them its because of your period if you do not feel comfortable.  But certainly you should not fake it or actually fast when you are not supposed to as this is something completely unnecessary.

  10. The reason Allah doesn't allow fasting while you're on your period is because it's not Healthy!

You can do it if you want but I don't think it's a good idea.

Just don't eat when people are around, maybe you can eat lunch in the washroom stall or something..  or you can just tell them why you aren't fasting.

  11. if u dnt want to eat while there around u. than its fine but read this

    1. O Prophet! Why holdest thou to be forbidden that which Allah has made lawful to thee? Thou seekest to please thy consorts. But Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. surat al-tahreem

  12. Just like when you get your period you can't pray. If i just wanted to  pray ( on my Period) for fun i would be disrespecting Allah(SWT). But i would love to know the answer to your question because i would love to fast with my ummah if though i can't.
