I did a total of 4.3 miles in 51 minutes.

but i actually ran a total of 3.6 miles varying speeds of 5.5-6 mph.

and then in total i walked from speeds of 3-4mph for .7 of a mile.

but i did that in 51 minutes.

is that bad? is it wayyy too slow?

it's the most i've ever ran i think in my life haha.

but i'm trying to get up to the 6 mile mark.

i'm 17, 5'5'', and 125 pds.

if it's too slow, how can i build up to maybe 4 miles in 35-40 minutes? would that be doable?

thank you!! (:

  1. yeah. thats pretty slow. i run a 3.1 in 22 minutes. which averages to a 7:09 mile...which i know i can keep that pace for another mile.2...which would give me about a 28-30 minute 4 mile run. 51 minutes is really slow. but just practice and condition and you will run faster in no time.

  2. thats real good

  3. well, im in the marine corps, and our standards are running 3 miles under 28 minutes, with is averaging 9 minutes per mile, over 3 miles, 4.3 miles in 51 minutes, is honestly pretty slow..try running at night, it is a lot more cooler, calm and relaxing, i try to run 5 miles every night..

  4. let me be honest and say this is not slow nor fast. Not knowing your athleticism i would say your an average runner... and it doest matter how quick you do it or how slow its about YOU actually running the fricken mile..lol

but if you do want to get better at it set goals for yourself and try beating your time for running the miles...

    Elissa- good luck

  5. i run the mile in track and i get 6 minute miles so i guess i'd get 24, but i dont know, cause you walked so its hard to tell.

  6. if i can run a mile in ten minutes your very slow

  7. it's slow. to build up run short distances quick. like a mile or less. then run mile or more quickly. alternate days.

  8. You are running and exercising. which is very good, so I wouldn't consider your time bad.  You ran 4.3 miles in 51 minutes.  What you need to do now is keep up your good work and training.

Were you on a treadmill?  If so you should vary your workout and run outside some to.  It is totally different than running on a treadmill.  Below I included a link to a webiste called Cool Running.  It has lots of great information on it as well as an area with a virtual trainer and training log, a way of tracking your progress.

World Class athletes can cover 4 miles in 20 minutes or less.  The world record for 5000M (track) is 12 minutes 37 seconds.  Tracks are usually faster than roads.  The world record for 10K on a road (6.2 Miles) is 27 minutes 2 seconds.

Obviously right now you aren't world class but I didn't post those times to discourage you, running can be very fun and thrilling.  Check out the cool runnings site, or a beginning runners training book, there are many great ones out there.  You'll learn about how to vary your training and increase your speed.  Before you know it you'll be clocking 30 minutes or less for your 4 mile run.

Try some races in your area, I am sure there are groups like the New York Road Runners (link below) in your area that put on races all the time.  You can meet other people who want to and like to run making it all the more fun.  Fun is the key to success in running, make sure it is fun for you.
