Northern Cardinal hangs out in lilac bush outside my window singing, well the a couple weeks ago i started whistling to it. NOW every morning he/she is in the bush singing, waiting for a response which i DONT give. Sometimes during the day ill whistle back, but it really seems like he/she is around the house 10 of the 12 hours of daylight. Is it lonely or? It also keeps slamming into this ONE window (right below mine), which thankfully has a screen over it so he/she just bounces off and hangs out in the tree. This has been going on for months and i just wanna know whats going on with this bird!! If it helps, the flying into the window thing started BEFORE the whistling/singing.

  1. Birds dont' believe that human whistles are bird whistles. It was coming around and singing before you started to whistle at it. It has nothing to do with you. In fact, you actually gave the true reason within your question. The bird is flying into the window becasue it sees the other bird, a reflection of itself. Birds can't tell the difference between reflection and real bird. It flies towards it, bouncing off, to try to get near to it. It comes around that much to try to get the other bird to follow it, play or mate. It never once believed your sounds were coming from that other bird in the window. It was coincidence.

Now, want to help the bird to move on? Simply put some paper or cardboard in between the glass window and the screen. The bird will stop seeing the other bird and go off. You'll need to leave it there for quite some time though. Birds are smart and can remember where to go eat or see another bird from last year.

It won't die. It's going to be fine even if you don't block out that window. Eventually the days will get darker, sooner and the bird will fly off.

  2. just keep wistleing and singing to it

  3. You need to make your windows less reflective..the bird may be seeing it's own reflection in the window and thinks an intruder is in his territory, or he sees the reflection of sky and trees and just thinks it is an extension of the outdoors.  Breeding season is almost over, so maybe his mate is not hanging out with him anymore..or maybe he is a young male who did not have a mate this year.  Look here for tips on how to get birds to stop flying into windows:

  4. I believe by the sund of it this bird thinks itself is its mate. I think it sees its reflection in your window and hears you whistle and thinks there is another bird like it inside. it could also be fighting with its reflection which they often do to chase potential mate compititon away. It may also think it can fly through your window. Decals work good to deter this. They live in bushes like that so that is why it is always there.

  5. put some decals on your window so he will quit flying into them before he gets hurt. Sounds like he is lonely. do you ever see any other cardinals, other than him?? Try putting up a birdfeeder with black sunflower seeds to attract other cardinals. he needs friends, cardinals are great to have around, they eat bugs and are so beautiful!!

  6. idk

  7. Birds do what they want when they do it they are on no set schedule, maybe its mate died and its just waiting for a sign to fly south for the winter.
