Question:

Is this bug a Brown Prionid?

I saw it at a carwash at 3 A.M, it didn't run from me or from light, and it was pretty slow, just crawling around. I live in central Oregon and have never seen anything even remotely like this. It was big, the body was 3-3.5 inches long. Could it be a Brown Prionid? Do they get that big? Or even live around here?

  1. It's a Long-horn Beetle.  They are completely harmless, and some species can get quit large.  They feed on decaying plant material, and the eggs are laid inside trees and the larvae develop there.  This beetle's larvae are preyed upon a great deal by Woodpeckers.

  2. It could be. It does look like a brown prionid (Orthosoma brunneum), though it's hard to tell without closer examination.

  3. It looks like a member of the prioninae subfamily.  To determine the species it is necessary to count the tarsi segments.  It is much easier just to call it a long-horned beetle of the family cerambycidae.
