My Kitten is around 7 months old.. at the most..I have taken her to the vet.. they say everything is fine.. but she continues to cough.. i give her a furball remover.. its like a paste i mix with her food once a week like the directions say.. is it common for adopted cats from a shelter to have a respretory problem? I do smoke.. but never in the house.. could this be making it worse?

  1. if the kennels are well taken care of and sanitary then it's not respiratory problems but idk where you got her. you might want to have another vet check her. give her lots of water too.

  2. maybe she has trouble breathing becasue the cigarette smoke goes inside somehow and she smells it maybe stop smoking or smoke somewhere else

  3. kennel cough is common, as there are a lot of other animals and a bunch of different danders floating around.  I've seen cats that develop  allergies to other cats because of it.  I would wait a little bit longer and monitor before visiting another vet.  It might clear up on its own.  Keep trying the feline hairball stuff

  4. Some cats get get the coughs or the sneezes when they are very young and if they do get sick and are not treated, the coughs of sneezes can last their whole lives even though they are no longer sick. Its sometimes cute, but sad.

  5. a lot of animals get URI's either before coming to the shelter or while they are at them. Did the vet put her on antibiotics to prevent secondary infection? I have 13 cats and I smoke, they do not cough. I know it isn't healthy for them or for me but I am saying that I don't think that is the reason.

cats and kittens also cough when they have worms. almost all kittens start out with worms and it takes several courses of meds to get rid of them. kits with roundworms cough because the worms become big and can actually snake up into the kit's throat triggering a cough. kits can also get lung worms but that is not very common.

best guess is parasites or a URI, either way you should take it to a vet and have it treated..might want to find a different vet if they can't find anything even when the cat is constantly coughing

  6. If you don't smoke around her then it's not affecting her.  But a lot of shelter animals get kennel cough and respiratory problems.  Did the vet check her lungs?  I would take her to a different vet and get another opinion.  It sounds like she has problems with her lungs.

  7. I would strongly recommend getting a second opinion from a different vet.  Is she having any discharge from her eyes or nose?  If so, she could have a respiratory infection.  She could also have an allergy, which smoke can irritate, even if you do it outside, it is still in your clothes and hair.
