Is this common in all acting classes?

They make you stand in front of the class and they ask everyone to say out loud what the first thing that comes to mind when they look at you.

Usually. And sometimes they will make you do odd things like say my name is and I do this and then point to someone else and such.

Yes, because you need to be ready, like in a movie or something. Its all practice for the "big thing."

the first thing that comes to mind was s*x!!! no no that would be a disgraceful thing. the first thing that comes to mind IS SUPERMAN!!! no no that would be way to random and childish... the first thing that comes to mind WILL BE PIZZA!!! no no I would look like a glutton in front of everyone. the first thing that comes to mind HAS BEEN OBAMA!! no no I would look like a black man i rather be a blind man than supporting a black man for presidency. the first thing that comes to mind HAD BEEN  SHAKESPERE!!! yes yes now i will look like i am interested in theatre!!!
