I am installing wireless in my home. I need to know if my children's computer has a wireless card. The computer is an "emachine T5048 Desktop PC". (Note: I am a computer idiot...lol).

I searched for a wireless card on the computer by doing this:

Right click on My Computer

Properties

Hardware

Device Manager

Network Adapters

It showed the following:

"Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC"

and Network showed:

"10/100 MBPS Ethernet LAN"

Is this wireless compatable right now?? Do I need to buy a wireless card?? Will this computer support a wireless card/ wireless system?

Anything else I need to know??

Thanks in advance for your help!!!!!!

  2. No, sorry.

I don't think your computer will be able to go wireless under that, but you can connect through Ethernet. If you want wireless, you'll need to purchase a Wireless Card or Wireless USB Adapter.

  3. Judging by the information you provided, the computer you are referring to DOES NOT have a wireless adapter installed. You'll need to go buy one. It isn't very difficult to install, just remove the ethernet card and replace it with the wireless card.

  4. nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo...

  5. you need to buy a wireless card. I have an old emachines just like that

  6. You need a wireless adapter card in the computer.  The NIC is used to communicate by cable and RJ-45 jacks over a network. You do have a PCI Express x16 expansion slot and 2 PCI expansion slots on your main board. You could have wireless adapter card installed at a computer store and it would be Wi-Fi ready.

  7. You need to buy a wireless adapter.

  8. Its not very expensive to buy a USB(the flat thin thing usually on front of the computer, some are also in the back) Wireless Netwrok Card.

There Easy to do just put it in and if any disk comes with it and a wizzard will help you through.

if that comp could do wireless in the bottom right corner you will see a computer thing (not the one with 2 computers thats the lan one wired)

right click it and it will say search for wireless networks if not then its not wireless.

    good luck

  9. hi you need to purchase a wireless network card, either USB or pcmcia type, pcmcia type is better, not as obtrusive and does not put a load on the processor, more below

  10. It doesn't seem to be.  Most modern computers have both the NIC (wired) card and wireless card built in and both would appear under Network Adapters in Device Manager.  If you have a CAT5 jack in the computer (the oversized looking phone jack) and that is the only NIC that shows up in the list, then you DO NOT have wireless.  There should also be a switch of some sort on the computer to turn wireless on/off if it were equipped with it.  You will then need to get a wireless card either via the PCI slot or USB.  Of course, you need to make sure you have a wireless router too.

    Hope this helps.

  11. The Realtek card is the wired internet card.  The Ethernet LAN is the logical connection using that card.  Desktops almost always come with a wired connection, and almost never come with a wireless connection.  (Laptops normally come with both.)

If you want to add a wireless card, I'd suggest either the Linksys WMP300N or, if you want to save a few dollars (the difference in operation won't matter for at least a few years - until the internet itself gets faster), the Linksys WMP54GS.  (I use two of these in my own network - 2 computers - and they've both been working just fine for a long time.)  If you don't want to risk opening the computer yourself, but the card at a place like Best Buy or Circuit City.   Bring the computer (just the big cabinet, you won;t need the monitor) with you and they'll install the card for you.  (They may charge you something for doing that.)  Or find a computer geek high school kid to do it.  It's really simple.

Stay away from USB internet adapters - they're a last resort solution.  If there's no other way (like a laptop without a PCMCIA slot), they'll work, but not nearly as well as an internal card.  And the price difference between USB and internal, for quality equipment (you can get wireless adapters for as little as $10 on sale, but oats that have already been through the horse are always cheaper than new ones), is no more than a couple of dollars.
