So i love the book The Wave. I've decided to create a book club/ journalist club about it. We would read one chapter each week, and write a summary about it in our journals. Then we would share it. We have finished journaling the book, and since I'm leader of the club, I've decided we would do a book report about it. Then we will move on to a different book.

So im almost finished, when I'm having some trouble deciding wether my friend's conflict is internal, or external.

Heres what she wrote:

The conflict of the story is that The Wave had become just like the n***s. During a Wave Rally, a boy was harassed and called a “dirty Jew,” because he wouldn’t join The Wave. Laurie and the members of their school newspaper, The Gordon Grapevine, deicide to post an issue about how negative The Wave has become. This issue contains about a few kids getting beaten up because they wouldn’t join the The Wave and parents coming to school to complain about it. Members of the The Wave decided that what Laurie and the newspaper staff posted in that issue were lies.

Do you think that this conflict is internal, or external?

Thanks for your answers!

  1. external because there are other people involved. internal just deals with yourself and problems ur having with urself. external deals with other people or other events happening outside of ur control area.

  2. I think the main theme of the novel is the appeal of fascism: what makes individuals want to become a part of a community that places an authoritarian state above all other concerns.

I think Laurie Saunders is the main voice of reason and protest against The Wave, and the cause of her protest would be an internal conflict, right against wrong.

There are obvious external conflicts going on in the story but in regards to the Protagonist, she is having an internal conflict.

While not an actual person, The Wave is the main antagonist, even “acting” on its own as its power grows, and here comes the external conflicts.

  3. The conflict that you are describing seems to be external because the outcome of every event is manifesting itself externally (e.g kids getting beat up, parents coming to school). The way that you can tell if a conflict is internal or external is if there is a visible and deliberate action being done. An example of an internal conflict would be if an individual did something wrong (externally) and they had a guilty conscious because of it (internally).......... I hope I didn't confuse you more!

    Best of luck

    Nick
