For the past year, I have been going to the ice rink once a week.

When I went on the ice for the fist time I LOVED IT! Then we started coming to the rink once a week.

At first I did the simple stuff like the bunny hop and waltz jump. Then I wanted to do the bigger stuff. I started to search the web and watch videos on youtube.

This is the stuff I can do now:

Jumps> waltz

salchow

toe loop

loop

flip

lutz(needs working on a little)

and axel i'm too scared to try lol.

Spins: Scratch spin

sit spin (I can do it but it needs working on too)

camel

Combo Spins:

Camel, pancake spin

Camel, sit spin.

Graceelementss:

Spiral

catch foot

billiman

shoot the duck

lunge

Flying spins:

Flying camel ( I can do it but it's not very good.)

So is this good for no lessons? Just wondering.

  1. its good you finally got a coach, because even though you taught yourself those things, one bad technique in your waltzjump could s***w up your axel, one little mistake in your lutz could make is very hard to get rid of for your double lutz.

    work on laybacks :D

  2. Although it's applaudable that you taught yourself many advanced skating moves for only skating once a week for a year,  I think it is extremely wise that you finally got yourself a coach!

There's a difference between being able to do a skating move . . . and being able to do it WELL.  Often when we teach ourselves a move, we may feel like we are doing it perfectly - but we can't "see" what we're actually doing wrong.  When we practice things incorrectly for a long time, we get muscle memory from that - and it's hard to break bad habits.  I hope you will not have to fix and relearn too many moves.  So there is both good and bad to learning things with no lessons. Your coach will supervise your skating from now on to make sure you are doing these moves correctly.

Skating isn't just about jumps and spins . . . it is necessary to know the basics - and to do them well.  Edges, turns, stroking, crossovers - in all directions - you cannot skip these and be able to progress further.  A strong foundation in basics will only better your skating.  In lessons, your coach may back track you a bit to work on these basics . . . if you don't work on them now, it will haunt you later on.

Sounds like you may be a fast learner and a self starter - that's a good thing.  But with a coach, you'll progress even faster - and most importantly - skate correctly!!!  Good luck!

  3. WOW! that's really good for no lessons!

  4. Wow thats amazing!!!

    im impressed! : )

  5. That's good, but make sure your technique is correct.  Actually those things aren't that hard to teach yourself, except the axle. No offense.

And for a year, that's pretty average progress.  But that's great you can do the flying camel, I haven't even learned that yet.

  6. WOW! If you can do all this like you say you can-then you're really good! And once a week. . .WOW.

Keep up the good work. :)

  7. yeah that's really good for no lessons. no offense, but i bet you have bad technique though. you'll improve exponentially with lessons. i was the same as you, i skated once a week for a year and taught myself stuff with no lessons but the farthest i got was a waltz jump and i couldn't even spin. but i had horrible technique and with lessons and a few years i can now do most of the double jumps.

  8. You're doing fabulous, dearie! I'm sure those lessons will help you improve dramatically, both in maneuvers and in your technique. Although, I am a little concerned if you go into competitions right away, because, even if you are able to do these, I am not quite certain if you have the proper... umm, how do I say this? Let's see... Hmm, the proper way to do them. Perhaps, wait a bit more until your coach has molded you properly and has brought you up to the gold medal standards! It may take a bit of time, but, as they say, patience is a virtue! =D I hope you have a wonderful, fun, yet somewhat strict, coach. Good luck, dear, and happy skating!

  9. That's considered INCREDIBLE for no lessons!!

  10. For no lessons that's awesome. In fact, for lessons that' awesome. You should definitely consider starting lessons, you have got a lot of raw talent. I wouldn't be surprised if you made it to the olympics.

  11. First of all, i doubt you even do any of those right, because if u were you wouldnt be learning it that fast, and you cant just teach yourself how to do stuff you need an actual coach. Also, you dont kno anything lyke 3turns, mohawks, pivots and things lyke that (you need to know them) because u never took lessons.

  12. OMG!! that is wicked good for teaching yourself!!!

  13. I just want to say... oMG!!! Is that even possible?? I pay more than $60.00 a week for a coach and I can't even do that c**p!!

  14. Yea that's really good. I know most of that, but from a trainer. Imagine what they could do to help you. Get someone to help maybe 30-60 minutes a few times a week. You can get really good!
