A car on the freeway hits a piece of road debris like some torn tire rubber from a big rig. The front end of the car gets banged up and it is $800 in damages. Is this under collision, comprehensive, or uninsured motorist insurance?

  1. that would be collision

  2. this would be covered under your collision coverages this would be considered an accident, an at fault accident because no other car was involved. you may want to consider paying it yourself if your deductibles is $500 b/c your premium for your insurance will probably increase b/c of the claim, your next policy term.

  3. lets see you had a collision with some torn tire rubber that was uninsured.  I'm not positive but I'm thinking it would be comprehensive.

  4. It is collision.  Generally, the road (or ground) is the determining factor of whether something is considered comprehensive or collision.  The road debris was sitting in the road & you hit it, therefore collision.  If the object was flying through the air & didn't touch the ground & it hit the top of your car, it is comprehensive (flying or falling object).

Uninsured motorist property damage coverage varies by state, some do not have it, some it is very very limited but in general it is for a collision with an uninsured vehicle.  Some states hit & run would be covered under UMPD & others the vehicle has to be proven to be uninsured (so you would have to know who hit you) so a hit & run would not be covered by UMPD.

    I hope this helps.

  5. That is collision.  And, believe it or not that is also your fault.  If the damage is $800 and minus your deductible the amount you will get may not be that much.

In California if the amount of damage the insurance company pays out is under $750 it does not count against you.   But that is different in every state.

  6. There is only one person that has given you the correct answer.....

    MSAD has directed you accurately.

Collision coverage would apply if you struck an object lying in the road.

Comprehensive would apply if an object is made to go air born by another vehicle and strikes yours.  This is what we call a missle.

Uninsured motorist would not apply for simple reason the "object" is not required to carry insurance by law and most insurance would consider this a road hazzard and not recoverable in claims under subrogation.

  7. If the item was just lying in the road when you hit it - this is usually collision. (damage to the front bumper and undercarriage).

If the item was air born when you hit it - this is comprehensive.  (damage to the grille/hood etc).
