Is this diaper rash or something else?

My 3 year old son is developmentally delayed and nowhere near ready for potty training yet. The problem is that for the last 6 months he has had what looks like a sort of diaper rash. It is white-head, pimply. The pimples themselves get red and inflamed, but the skin other than the pimples is not inflamed. The pimples even go up his belly and down his leg sometimes. It does get under control with diligent use of A&D ointment, but comes right back. I have mentioned it to his doctor when we were there for something else and she took a quick glance at it and just said it is diaper rash. Is it possible it is a yeast infection or something else? It just doesn't look like any other diaper rash I have seen.

  1. This sounds like a yeast rash/infection.  Use a yeast cream such as Lotrimin twice a day.  If there is any way to leave his diaper off-please do.  Air needs to circulate to this area because yeast thrives in dark warm places.  It should clear up in 3-5 days.

  2. hard to say, but because it spreads up the tummy and down the legs, it dosnt sound like a diaper rash....have you changed laundry soaps, or new diapers, something like that....

Corn starch in the diaper will help keep him dry and will clear up the rash, if in fact it is a diaper rash....if you are still concerned with it, i would go see a new doctor..

  3. do they start to bleed??  if it starts to bleed i would say something to your dr.  i had that same problem with my oldest and you really can't do anything except for cream them to death until he's in underwear and then i would use either ivory snow, dreft, or arm and hammer no scented laundry detergent on him. i have that with hope my oldest since she was a baby and i can't use any kind of detergent on her besides arm and hammer.   when she was a baby for hers i used bag balm.

    good luck
