Is this doctor an Idiot?

Okay my hubbys been prescribed a medicine for anxiety to take everyday. He has white coat syndrome so his heart rate accelerates when he's at the doctor. The doctor prescribed him Toprol to reduce his heart rate. I read up on Toprol and it said to tell your doctor if you are currently taking anxiety medicine. A side effect of Toprol is unclear thoughts, shakiness, and shouldnt operate heavy machinery. This doctor knows my husband works around heavy machinery everyday. Here is the question.....Does anyone know if you can take Lexapro and Toprol together without a negative reaction or will the 2 actually help each other work? Or know of any websites that I can look this up?

  1. what happened to you is unfortunatly all too common in modern medicine.  the doctor should have asked if he was on any conflicting medications.  it would also be good to be informed about the meds he is taking and what not to take with it.

  2. here is some info on what you cannot take with toprol... i would check the lexapro one too but unless he is noticing serious side effects it looks ok.http://www.webmd.com/drugs/drug-9548-Top...

  3. Ergh...that's a bit of a prickly one.

Has the same doctor prescribed both medication?  If so, it should be okay.  Sometimes there are interactions to medication but, as far as the interactions are concerned, it's better to take both medications for the benefits in the individual case.

If the same doctor hasn't prescribed both, I would make at least one doctor aware (ideally both) and ask for their opinion.  It's a smart move to inform yourself about the medication concerned but it can also be just more confusing.  To clear it up, I would get your doctor to help you out.

    All the best. :-)

Update: Thanks for the extra information, Holly.  No, that's fair enough to be concerned.  I don't blame you at all and you did the right thing by contacting the pharmacist.  I would get a second opinion if I were you.  It just might be worth it (at least to put your mind at ease, which is very important: he is your husband).
