The price (with a lot of extra equipment) is 370 but i'm not sure if this brand name is good. so has anyone used a Sound Percussion set? the one i want is a 5 piece set here http://www.guitarcenter.com/Sound-Percussion-5-Piece-Drum-Set-490865-i1372732.gc (reminder: this is the set listed not the package). so if anyone could tell me that would be great! Thanks!

God bless!

  1. Dude, don't buy it dude.

OK, I recommend going to as many music stores & performances as possible.  Hit them & find out what type of snares, toms & bass drums you like.

Some rack toms are deeper than others.  Personally, I like the shallow/classic jazz tom.  They sound very punchy & articulate.  I'm able to set them horizontally and play down on them. You see, they are shallow and can be dropped down lower before contacting the bass drum.  Deeper toms sound bigger, like stadium rock drums.

Know a few good brands of drums...there are many out there.  Some are: DW, Yamaha, Pearl, Ludwig, Slingerland & Mapex.  Remember, all drum companies will make different series' of drum sets.  Some are not very good quality, so take your time figuring it out.  I play shows with a DW now.  Yamaha also makes a killer set in my opinion.

When you're ready to buy, definitely look on craigslist.com.  Can't stress that enough.  You can seriously save big dough this way.  You could get a nice pro maple kit used for the same price as your kit above.  Ebay isn't bad either.  It really helps to get some new heads after you buy used drums.  I like Remo pinstripe or Evans hydraulic for toms.

Don't be afraid to piece together a mis-matched kit.  Just make sure you can mount your toms somehow.  Either get a compatible mount throught the top of the bass drum, or put them all on stands.  One of my friends uses a 4-piece kit.  He uses snare stands for the snare and the rack tom.  Floor tom has independent legs.  You can also mount rack toms on cymbal stands...which is smart.  Mix-matched kits are awesome in my opinion.  I like the idea of hand-picking every drum in your kit.

I also noticed the kit above has two rack tom mounts coming out of the bass drum.  I've never liked that setup because you can't get them very close together.  It's important to tighten up your setup so you can easily reach everything.  Also, the bass drum tone gets even more distorted with a second metal pipe running through it.

My first kit was an 80's model gray Ludwig 5-piece.  $200.  Bought a package of new stands.  Found used cymbals too.

    Hope that helps some.
