  1. Your brother most likely fits into one of two scenarios. #1 he has dyslexia. #2 He is getting ahead of himself by trying to read too fast.  Dyslexia is when someones vision causes them to see things in reverse.  An example would be the word "apple" a person with dyslexia would see "elppa" with the exception that the letters would also be reversed.  The only true way to tell if he suffers from dyslexia is to get a doctor's diagnosis.  There are a host of things this could be a sign of from learning disabilities to a simple mistake or boredom.  Try to be patient.  Either way your brother needs your continued support.

  2. Could also be AD/HD or a processing problem or just a reading disability.  Dyslexia is very complex.

  3. What does his teacher say? Is there a concern at the school?  Is your mom or dad concerned about this? Mabe your brother gets nervous reading around you. Sometimes children just read too quickly and do say words out of order. My daughter(same age) does this on occasion, especially with easier books. I think we are too quick to label people. Continue reading with your brother, and don't point out his mistakes. Talk to your parents(I am assuming they are the ones responsible for him). See what they think. He can get tested at his school for dyslexia or other learning disabilities if there are concerns.

  4. THE most common misunderstanding re dyslexia is letter or word reversal or words and sentences dancing around on the page.

Dyslexia is a specific learning disability and is of neurological origin.  Most noted are difficulties with accurate or fluent word recognition and spelling and writing, decoding abilities.  It is a disorder in one or more of the processes involved in using language, spoken and written and can show itself as an imperfect ability to listen, read, think, speak, write, and spell and even math.

Obvious signs are that they cannot read at their grade level.  They cannot read many of the words by sight as the average reader.  They cannot decode, rather they do not know letter sound correspondence therefore they do not have the ability to identify unknown words.  This leads to problems comprehending  what they do read because of the great difficulty they will encounter when trying to 'read' the written word.

He needs instruction in phonemic awareness, sound manipulation.  Can he identify every letter and its sound?  Can he identify every vowel, short and long?  If he cannot do these things fluently and without error, he needs help at his age.

    good luck

  5. Your brother is not alone. There are MANY kids [people] that

have dyslexia that go undiagnosed. They tend to switch the beginning and the end of what they are looking at to read..

If not recognized early in life, dyslexia causes all manner of learning disabilities that can be treated. From what you've told me about how your brother reads simple sentences he has a classic case of dyslexia.

Tell his teacher about it and ask him or her to get help ASAP.

The longer he sees things backwards the mor he will compensate by pretending to be stupid---which I'm sure he is not.

  6. Its not uncommon for Dyslexics to mix up words and letters, however there is usually other problems too such as learning letters and their sounds or reversing letters e.g. letters b's and d's when reading or writing them.

The only way your going to find out if your brother is Dyslexic, is for him to be assessed by a qualified person who specialize in Dyslexia. His school maybe able to organize for him to be assessed, but they will only do so if they feel he is struggling.

Both my daughter and I have Dyslexia, I have Dyslexia without Dysgraphia where as my daughter has In Dyslexia with Dysgraphia, and we both have Dyscalculia. My daughter wears pale blue Irlen lenses (tinted lenses), which has helped her immensely both with reading and writing.
