Question:

Is this enough money for ferret supplies?

I am maybe getting a ferret sometime soon, and I'm just wondering about the money. Don't get me wrong money is not a problem, but just wondering.

Ferrets here are 250$ plus tax, (comes to 283$), they are descented, fixed and vaccinated so he/she would not need to see vet until their next annual vaccinations, (next year).

I have 388$, and i already have a cage, a homemade hammock, bedding and a litter box.

Like I said the ferret is 283$, after i purchase the ferret i would have 105$ left. The food, Marshalls brand is 30$ here. Should i have enough money to get supplies with 105$ left over.

I'm getting a job in like 2 weeks, so i will be putting money aside for vet bills.

Just let me know!

Thanks

  1. My walmart carrys ferret food for 5.00 it works fine, my ferrets are not fat and not underweight. they are fine. one thing that you really need is the stuff that you pump in their water to make their pee not stink.

  2. That should be fine :D

you can get a used cage from your pet store and if you don't feed it that muddy stuff it wont be expensive(you can get pellets)

the ferret itself should be $100

    good luck!

  3. Having and maintaining a ferret is very costly I have had 3 and let me tell you are they expensive! The supplies you would need and do not already have should be under 105$, but not by much. Liter is expensive and you are probably going to have to buy them a new hammock every 2 months because they can get destroyed easily. Don't forget the necessities like water bottle, food dish, etc. And its always good to have a leash handy. So in conclusion, The supplies you will need after purchasing the ferret would add up to very little under 105$.

    Hope I helped!!

  4. You're wrong on one thing: your vaccination schedule. Your ferret, if it is a kit will only have it's first set of shots. Here's what they need

Rabies (Imrab 3) 16 weeks of age (or first vet visit if older) then once yearly

Distemper (for kits) 6 to 8 weeks, 11-12 weeks, 14-16 weeks  and then once yearly. Make sure you ask what kind of shots it's had when you buy it. It's a good idea to let your vet look at it anyway after you first bring it home to make sure all's well. It should be a vet who knows a lot about ferrets, not all do.

Seems like you got everything under control pretty much. Make sure you learn all you can. Sign up with a ferret group online or join one in your area.

And please invest in a book or two(Ferrets For Dummies, for instance).

PS: and please, PLEASE do NOT buy that c**p that Walmart sells for ferret food. It's so bad, it's dangerous.

Check out www.ferret.com for ferret supplies. I get my stuff there, the prices are reasonable and so is the shipping.

  5. Besides wanting quality food and good ferret starter text like _Ferrets for Dummies_ (which is even referred to by us old hands) you also WILL have to plan on vaccination costs if buying from a pet store.  Typical pet store ferrets have ONLY the first of the three kit Canine Distemper vaccinations, and do not have rabies vaccinations.

Putting aside money for veterinary costs is a great idea.  Ferret medical care really adds up after a while.  In our area it is normal for the vet care for a ferret's lifetime (about 7-8 years) to run around $5,000, most of it late in life usually so saving ahead makes complete sense.

    Sukie (not a vet)
