I wanted to pay a £290 bill by cheque but was paid by cash off a job.

So I paid £300 into the machine on Thursday, Friday was one business day, Saturday and Sunday came and went, Monday was the 2nd business day and it came up as available to use on Tuesday.

How bad is that ??????

  1. It all depends on what time you made the credit on the first day as after a certain time banks wont show it as a credit until the next day and that will count as your first day

  2. thats rubbish... I always thought cash is available to use as soon as you pay it in.... at least it is with HSBC.  Maybe check with them and move banks so it doesn't happen again.

  3. They really should give you same day, if not instant value for cash. I would consider switching. I also have to back the comments for HSBC - can't fault them

  4. Thats terrible!! I bank with Barclays and when i pay money in,its available within minutes!

  5. The Abbey is the biggest load of c**p i have ever dealt with and Useless. That's why i changed to HSBC spot on bank. I would change banks if i was you.

  6. I use Abbey and they are dreadful.  Their charges are extortionate.  As soon as I can pay off my overdraft I will change to the Co-operative.

A cousin from South Africa is mystified by the English banking system.  In SA you make a transfer - it's done that day.  Do it in UK - 3-4 working days.  Why?  Why does a cheque take so long to clear but not in South Africa or America?

I wish there was some way in which we could all complain more and more and more about our banks.  For example, there is not enough money in your account to pay some direct debits - the money is going in next day - but banks are so impersonal these days that they don't know that. So they reverse the DDs, and THEN they have the nerve to charge you £35 for each one, so your bank balance goes down and down ... You enquire about a refund of charges and somebody tells you that you can only have ONE refund of extortionate charges every 12 months.  Where did that come from?  Where did £35 come from?  Where does any of it come from?  I HATE banks.

  7. One would expect cash to be available as soon as someone verified the deposit.  I don't think this is uncommon though.
