I do lawn services in my area on the side for extra work. I want, and need more customers...however this being my only source of income right now, I want to print out some fliers, and maybe put them on peoples doors, I was told you cant put them in mail boxes etc. So is this something I can do without getting in any trouble or whatever? I live in Westerly, RI

  1. oommmgg! i live in westerly ri too! put stuff up on providence craigslist.com go to the westerly sun and put an ad in the news papers also go to dunns corners market and put stuff up on the buliten board. put an advertising magnet on your car with your phone number and leave it so you can see it when its parked. also go to the radio station by the westerly credit union and ask how much it would cost to place an ad that they say over the air! hope i helped!

omg i think its so funny we live in the same town haha =]

  2. I agree no doors, and definitly no mailboxes, but car windows and supermarkets is good

  3. no dont put them on doors.

find a parking lot and put them on wind shields. much safer.

  4. Maybe consider a public relations type event. For example, sponsor a "clean up the litter" event. Get a few friends to help you spend a couple of hours on Saturday afternoon cleaning up litter on the street with the busiest stores - where the people are, not out of the way places like parks.

Wear distinctive vests, maybe a sandwich board or two and have lots of fliers ready to hand out. You'll have maximum exposure for the least effort, be able to hand out fliers in advance - to advertise your volunteer community event - clearly sponsored by your company of course!) The best potential market would probably be seniors and they'd be the most impressed by your effort. A bonus could be free media coverage because of the community angle.

Stick to it by doing something similar once a month during the summer and then you'll be in a perfect position for snow removal next winter. Consider offering a discount on snow removal to anyone who has used your services during the summer. That way they'll already be thinking of you when winter comes. And make it a one time discount only - never give an open ended discount except maybe 10% off for seniors.  (People can let their lawns grow long until they have time to do it but snow has to be cleared right away.)

Building a business almost never happens immediately. The secret is to have a good idea, believe in it even when your best friends think you're crazy and keep at it while your competitors get discouraged and give up. Hard work, smart planning and patience will pay off. Not to mention the satisfaction of doing it your way. Don't be afraid to shoot for the stars - even if you only get to the moon, you;ll have accomplished way more than most people. Good luck.

PS: Even if you don't want to work at this full time, if you're truly entrepreneurial, set up the business and then subcontract the actual work and keep the profit. That way you can make money even while you're going to school.

  5. Putting them in the doors is not a bad idea.  It is against the law to place them in mailboxes, but seldom (if ever) enforced.

  6. what i would do is spread the word by mouth, hopefully your customers can help you, when you talk to ppl tell them about your business; make business cards for yourself and when you talk to ppl about it give them your card.  Also be a gentlemen when talking to the people.  You can put flyers on cars I believe

  7. I don't see that being a problem, every city I have ever lived I have gotten fliers on my door or gate.

  8. Put a brochure on the local supermarket bulletin board... and church.  Take an ad in the local PENNY SAVER... or free community paper...  Craiglist.org...

and of course.. WORD OF MOUTH.   Offer a couple of bucks discount if one of your customers give a recommendation... Perhaps give them a "10% coupon" with their name on it.

  9. Create your own website and hand out business cards...also word of mouth
