Question:

Is this homemade rat food I made good enough?

I read a lot of other homemade rat food mixes. And all of them contain dog food. I'm not willing to buy dog food so I made this mix.

A mixture of quick oat, almonds, sunflower seeds, little bits of crunched of walnuts( so theres not too much fat ), and only a little bit of uncooked rice. I may add a bit of the cereals I'm eating, which are the healthy kinds, not the children coloured kinds or any very sugary kinds.

Then I give separately bits of, carrots, apples and sometimes a spoon of yogurt.

I think this is pretty much good enough for a rat to be healthy. Maybe its not 100% nutritionally complete, but its almost.

Does anyone know any other homemade food mixes for rats, that DON'T require dog/cat food?

Thank you.

  2. thats perfect,it is all they need exept, the nuts, they are very bad for rats and tend to make them overweight.it is good to give one to them at least once a week.trust me i had to learn that the hard way.oh and give it some penut butter once in a wile they love it.hope this helps

  3. ANY home-made mix requires a source of animal protein to be nutritionally complete. If you won't buy dog food, either buy lab blocks or get used to the idea of cooking for your rats (non-spicy meat - chicken, low-salt ham, turkey, fish, etc.) Hard-boiled eggs are also good for rats (as something they get once a week), and the rats will eventually learn to pull the shell off themselves (though I'd recommend peeling the egg before you give it to the rats to prevent injury).

Rats are exactly like people in many ways: they need fruit, veggies, grain products and meat - in exactly the same proportions as people do, only in smaller quantities. A hearty meal for a rat is about the size of a large grape. You need to feed them a wide variety of things - YOU wouldn't be healthy if you only ever ate the same few fruits and veggies (say, apples, carrots, cucumber, peas, grapes and kiwifruit), for years and with no variation - you'd have vitamin deficiencies galore. The exact same thing applies to rats. Ideally, they should be fed good-quality lab blocks (those ARE nutritionally complete!) in addition to a wide variety of fresh foods, especially when they're growing babies.

If you're "not willing" to feed your rats a complete diet, why did you get them in the first place? Pet ownership is a big responsibility - not just a thing you discard after a while.
