Is this hotel in a safe section of Los Angeles?

I'm going to LA for the first time, and I don't know the area at all. I found a hotel at 1520 N. LaBrea Ave in Hollywood. Does anyone know if that's a nice area?

Yeah, it's not really a glamorous or high-class type of area, but it's also not riddled with crime or gangs.  It's pretty commercial...you know, a lot of commerce and vehicle traffic.

I find a good rule of thumb is checking for aaa ratings / mobil ratings.  Preferably you want a 3 diamond rated hotel or higher from aaa and 4 stars from mobil or higher.  Check out the hotel on www.tripadvisor.com to read anything about the hotel of your choosing.
