Question:

Is this how it's said in France?

Here in New England a lot of the people of French background refer to their aunt tatante and their uncle as tononcle. I know these mean your aunt and your uncle, I want to know if people from France use the same expressions or if it's strictly a North American thing.

  1. In France 'ta tante' means your aunt, 'ton oncle' means your uncle.

If you want to call them you say either :

    - tante X or oncle X (add the name)

    - ma tante, mon oncle (verrry old fashion and posh)

    - tata, tonton (very colloquial)

  2. Well, here in France, if I were talking about my aunt or uncle I would say "Mon oncle" or "Ma tante".  To talk about a friend's uncle or aunt with them we say "Ton oncle" or "Ta tante".  We do not say "Mon tononcle" or "Ma tatante".

I hope that clears it up and I understood your question right.
