Question:

Is this information appropriate to mention in an interview?

I currently work nights and weekends at a medical library on a college campus. It is my understanding that a day job at the main library on campus may be posted soon. I want to apply for it because I want to work days and the job, despite being a lower pay-grade, sounds like it would be more fulfilling. My question is, if I get an interview & if I'm asked why I am interested in the job, it it okay to mention those two things - that I want to change shifts & that I want a position that will keep me busy?

Thanks!

  1. Yes. Though it is not required, if they do ask 'mentioning it' may benefit to demonstrate you have thought about the role and change in commitment from you. Good Luck.

  2. sounds good, that is a positive reason

  3. I think it is ok! Good luck!

  4. yeah thats ok.... it's always nice to be honest & open on interviews.

  5. Absolutely!

  6. Of Course! That's a Plus!

  7. Leave out the "busy" part.  I would say that you love working there and see this as an opportunity to be in a position that you feel is *even more* suited to you and your career goals. I would focus on the duties of the new job and say how much they appeal to you.

I am not sure that I would bring up the shift change-wait and see if they do and then say you are positive you will enjoy those hours and are able to work them.

If they voice a concern about the reduction in pay, tell them that you are more interested in having a job where the tasks are especially appealing to you, that you do not mind less pay if you know you will truly enjoy the work. Don't mention anything about pay unless they do first.

    GOOD LUCK!

  8. I can't see why you wouldn't mention it. They probably want someone who know what they are doing, and you already have experience. That would make you more, not less desirable.

Explain that you are aware the pay will be lower for that shift, and let them see your enthusiasm for the job.

They would be foolish not to give it to you.

  9. ya, they will like how u will want to work hard.

  10. Yes, you have a good response.  Get the negative out of the way at the beginning, then move on to all the positive, such as

"I understand the position is a lower pay grade. However, I enjoy my work in a specialized Medical Library and believe the challenge working in a busier Main Library will broaden my work experience, be more fulfilling, and the hours would allow for a more regular lifestyle, which shift work does not afford me"....demonstrating that you have already weighed the pros and cons.

    Good Luck
