Is this kinda weird? Luck? Skill? ?

I have been riding for about 6 years now, but I have never fallen off a horse. Is that really weird? I have walked, trotted, cantered, jumped, trail ridden, ridden bareback, but never have I fallen off. I don't understand. Am I just lucky or, what? I have had quite a few close calls, where I almost fell off, but never actually fallen.

Oh, and I've even barrel raced before, and I've had a horse spook quite a few times before. I've even had a horse run me under tree branches!

  1. Hehehehehehehe your lucky...but a fall is coming your way! Your due for one, lol. I've been riding for as long as you and I've fallen off 3 times. 1 happened when we were trotting, then the pony I was riding cantered and turned at the same time. I lost my balance. (I hadn't been cantering that long). 2 I was jumping a greenie. She knocked her front legs into the jump, kicked her front legs with her back legs, heard the sound of the jump getting knocked down, and spooked. She galloped about one stride then gave a huge buck and off I went! 3 was on the same pony as 1, it happened last week. He spooked and started bucking, then he turned (while bucking) and I fell off. He's such a butthead, once you fall off he'll immediately stop and stare down at you. He's old and grumpy at age 27 (he's in REALLY good shape...everyone thinks he's 10or 15). The greenie was 4 or 5 at the time. So anyway, your really lucky for not falling off...but your due! Falls are inevitable! LOL

  2. Its luck! Your lucky!! Dont jinx yourself!~

  3. that means u must have good balance. i fell of my icelandic pony only cuz he took off and HE is powerful. I have fallon off jumping and i fell off when i was at a show and when my horse has bucked. but now i know how  to stop a buck.

  4. I had never fallen of the horse I rode at a barn for 4 years, then once I bought him I fell off for the first time that very weekend after purchase.  LOL!!! Holding on to the mane will help you from falling, it helps you balance.  My horse thinks it's a cue to go faster though, he's like "Ok she holding on no I can go Gallop really fast"  I have never fallen from jumping or trail rides, but never say never it's only a matter of time!

Good Luck!! When you do fall try not to be stiff but limber and roll away from the horses hooves (this will keep you from breaking bones), and let go of the reins. The horse will still keep running sometimes and can drag you.

  5. I once made a brag like that.  I had been riding for years and had never fallen, though I had a horse fall with me on it once I was still in the saddle when it got up.  However within a couple months of the statement a horse I was training decided to take a sharp right turn as I was leaning to signal her to turn left.  I sort of just hung there in mid air for a moment.  I think the horse was already 10 or 20 yards away before I actually hit the ground. LOL!!!!

In short it means that you haven't ridden enough to fall off.  Don't get offended by that though because I ride nearly 500 miles of trail a year.  All I am saying is that if you continue to ride you WILL fall off.

Oh and my 6 year old daughter has been riding for almost 4 years without being strapped to me and  has not fallen off yet even though once a horse she was on jumped a ditch and cleared it by nearly three feet.

  6. you are kinda lucky but theres a saying that your not a real rider till youve fallen off twelve times. ive fallen off about 20 something and ive mastered the art of gracefully but till this day every fal i take just makes me better

  7. It is like how I ride my bike. I learned and never fell of my bike. One day I almost fell off my bike but I saved myself by using the brakes. Then I felt proud so it is skill.

  8. theres a  saying called ur not a real ridder till u fall off.

ive fallin off about 15 times.

and all i can say is its made me a better rider.

im not saying that not falling off is makin u worse.

but once you fall off u no how to handle is better the next time.

and ive been riding all my life scnic i was 4 wich is 8 yrs.

  9. And then comes the day when the more you post this the harder your fall is going to be and you are going to be really sorry you were not more mature in your younger very immature days.

  10. Boasting much? xD

Falling off is all part of being a good rider. You learn from your mistakes, have the courage to get back on, and this experience - I believe - makes you a better rider.

Also, just a tip for you - being bigheaded won't get you anywhere in life, so please stop posting this question for the sake of my sanity.

  11. You asked that yesterday... But I don't think it's that weird.  I rode for 4 years without falling off.  Luck I suppose.

I also follow the belief you aren't a rider until you fall off.  I was actually really excited when I finally did hit the ground.

  12. Are you trying to gloat that you have never fallen now?  because you have posted this same question before.

Trust me, once you start riding greener horses you'll fall, so since your so good, challenge yourself on a green broke.

  13. From yesterday:

    "Pride goeth before a fall"

  14. your very lucky.  however you become a cowgirl when u take your first fall off a horse.  i havent had many falls from my horses in the past.  when i was taking lessons i dont think i ever fell,  my first fall was when i was cantering the horse i leased bareback, only a halter and rope, no helmet (woops).  he took a sharp turn and i just kinda slid off (no real harm done)

the next time i fell off was with my old horse i used to own.  (put down due to lameness problems)  i was racing a friend and all of a sudden he ran into the railing of the arena/  i didnt really fall but i had to do kindof an emergency dismount.

i fell again on the same horse when he threw me off.  this time the fall knocked me unconcious, gave me a concusion, gave me a huge scrape on my back, and gave me a little bit of a fear of him

same horse i was riding in the arena taking a lesson and we were cantering,  my horse took a sharp turn and fell.  i kinda went tumbling but nothing serious,

that was the last time i fell

ive had a few close calls since then but nothing major.  my current horse likes to stop and turn around on the trail,  i can stay on but its hard

congrats on not falling off cause that does take skill

  15. Sounds like luck to me. The best of riders can fall off. Try galloping or riding unbroken or green horses and see how you go then.

  16. i guess it could be luck or youre just a good rider. lol

  17. Give it time, you will.

It happens to the best of us.

  18. maybe you're just not challenging yourself enough ?

the barn i learned to ride at, i never ever fell off once. Because I wasn't challenged. Now i ride at my show barn, i challenge myself. I show in the hunter/jumpers, but on the side i do dressage, cross country, trail rides, bareback, and i also green break horses.

That leaves lots of room for falling off !

I'm deff. not saying you should ever put yourself in a dangerous situation, but i think you should evaluate your progress, horse and coach. Do they fit your current level?

One of my fav quotes is "You need to learn how to fall, before you can learn how to ride"

Just something to think about. Hope it helps :)
