Question:

Is this likely to be a hard drive/motherboard problem?

Some months ago my pc needed fixing, and the hard drive was replaced. Now it has again started to go wrong. What happens is that there is no power, and it requires 4 or 5 attempts to switch on (usually monitor, but sometimes pc as well). The plugs etc are okay.

I am taking it to be seen, but my worry is that it will be another prolonged job or replacing everything.

Could it just be a few screws that need tightening?!

  1. There is a power supply to the hard drive inside the computer.  Have you made sure that this is not the problem.  It could be faulty cable from the power box inside or something wrong with the power box itself.  You could try fitting the hard drive to a mates computer that would rule out the hard drive.

  2. yup

  3. You have an OS right/?

If you manage to turn it on use a regystry cleaner(hard disk with OS isn't replaced right? ) and maby you can try tune up utilities (DISK DOCTOR) to check the hard disks for errors!

Try these and you will get result! Trust me ;)

  4. This has nothing to do with the hard drive. It seems to me like you might have a problem with your power strip or UPS unit (if you have one), since you describe the problem also happening with your monitor. Try using another power strip you know works and see if the problem persists.

But since I'm not sure if when you say monitor you're not just referencing to the monitor receiving a signal due to the computer not being turned on, it could also be a problem with the computer.

If it's a problem with the computer, it could be your PSU (power supply unit). If it's the PSU, all you got to do is replace it and you're good to go. It could also be a problem with your motherboard. But, from the sound of it, you could have a bad power switch in your computer's case. Testing this is relatively easy, but if you have never messed inside your computer case I would not recommend it. On your motherboard there are two pins that are connected to the power switch. To test it, you would have to disconnect the power switch and then short these two pins with something that conducts electricity, like a screwdriver tip. That should power the system on right away. If you do that and it powers it on every time, it could be a power switch problem. You need to be careful when doing this though. Do not touch anything else on your motherboard while there's power plugged in or you might damage it or even get electrocuted! If you don't feel comfortable doing this just take it down to the local technician and mention the power switch.

  5. not sure of the question but there are known issues with certain motherboards and hard drive combos

but it might be a power issue too

if your computer does not have enough power it will cause slow death of a computer (think of it as a heart attack for ypour pc)if your power is not up to voltage it will be forced to make more and some times cant do it

also to much electricity can also damage your pc

buy a power line conditioner and voltage regulator in the form of a UPS (uninteruptable power supply)

  6. Please give more details about your hardware configuration, especially the video card+CPU+PSU.
